In a major leap for India’s sustainable future, cleantech startup UKHI launched its groundbreaking biopolymer EcoGran on World Environment Day 2025 at Vigyan Bhawan. The event, attended by key dignitaries including Dr. Jitendra Singh, Hon’ble Minister of Science & Technology and Prof. Abhay Karandikar, Secretary of the Department of Science & Technology, marked a defining moment in the country’s environmental journey. Ambassadors from the Netherlands and Denmark, along with leaders from academia and the startup ecosystem, were also present.

Plastic pollution and stubble burning problems

EcoGran is a biodegradable plastic made from crop waste, offering a powerful solution to India’s twin challenges of plastic pollution and stubble burning. Developed by UKHI, EcoGran aims to turn agricultural waste into wealth. It promises to add Rs. 15,000 per acre to farmer incomes, reduce stubble burning, and provide an affordable, scalable alternative to imported bioplastics, 30% cheaper and 100% Indian in innovation.

India currently generates 9.3 million metric tons of plastic waste annually, with 90% of its major rivers choked by single-use plastics. EcoGran offers a circular economy model that turns this crisis into an opportunity. The project is expected to create over 500 green jobs within 30 months and aims to achieve a production capacity of 1 lakh tonnes per year by 2030.

At the launch, Mr. Anil Singh, GM of IIT Mandi Catalyst, highlighted the role of the DST incubation ecosystem in empowering startups like UKHI to deliver impactful climate solutions. The event was held under the theme “TATWA: Transforming Air, Temperature, Water through Climate Actions,” symbolizing India’s integrated approach to environmental innovation.

EcoGran is backed by partnerships with leading institutions including the Indian Institute of Packaging, NSRCEL – IIM Bangalore and ICAR, Pusa. With full support from DST’s Climate, Energy & Sustainable Technology (CEST) Division, the launch aligns with India’s Mission LiFE initiative and the nation’s vision for a cleaner, greener future.
